COMPARATIVE MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTIC OF RAPANA VENOSA (GASTROPODA: MURICIDAE, RAPANINAE) FROM DIFFERENT WATER AREAS OF THE NORTHERN PART OF THE BLACK SEA

Abstract

Rapana venosa is a widely spread across the world predatory shellfish, which invasion in the Black Sea led to a significant reduction in the number of filter shellfish and as a consequence, the restructuring of bottom biocenoses in many parts of the sea. In some areas of theBlack Sea rapana possess conchiologic features that are associated with differences in environmental conditions and may represent separate groups of rapana metapopulation within the areal. The aim of this paper was to study morphometric polymorphism of rapana shells in different environmental conditions of the northern part of the Black Sea waters. The rapana size and mass structure was studied on the base of samplings in 2008-2012 (N = 1657) in waters of Zmeiny iIsland,Tarkhankut Peninsulaand Gulf of Odessa. The area of Tarkhankut Peninsulais characterized as depressed: rapanas` size of this group was reduced, the average weight made 35-45 g. In the water area of Zmeiniy Islandand Gulf of Odessathe total mass of the shellfish made 58-66 gand 64-90 g, respectively. Large differences are also observed in the analysis of indicators such as the ratio of the width of the shell to its height, the ratio of height to the height of mouth of the shell, the ratio of width to height of the mouth of the shell, the ratio of the shell weight to its height. It is shown that in different environmental conditions, including lack of food, rapana forms adaptive ecological associations. Its individuals are different in most morphometric parameters and presumably may represent different populations.
