Journal Title: VIMS Health Science Journal - Year 2019, Vol 6, Issue 2
Abstract
Background: Acne vulgaris is one of the commonest skin disorder which is easiest to diagnose because of its distinctive anatomic distribution, the age of onset and polymorphic appearance with pathognomic lesions i.e. comedones. Conventional therapy with antibiotics and retinoids provide mixed results and can be associated with complication. Challenges and limitation to these conventional therapies call for the need of newer, safer and effective modalities for treatment of acne vulgaris. This study is based on comparing two safe adjunctive therapeutic modalities i.e Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and 20 % Salicylic Acid (SA) peeling in the treatment of acne vulgaris. Objective: To compare the efficacy and adverse effects of Intense Pulsed Light V/S 20% Salicylic Acid peeling in patients of acne vulgaris. Methodology: This prospective study was conducted at a tertiary care center from November 2015 to October 2017. This study included 96 patients, 48 patients in each group, with comedones and inflammatory lesion of acne between the age group of 15 years and 25 years. Mann Whitney Test, Willcoxon signed rank test, chi-square test were used for analysis of results., P-value was checked a 5 % level of significance. Results: In this study, both the therapies showed improvement in patients by reduction in lesion count and less adverse effects, but Intense Pulsed Light therapy gave better results in comparison to Salicylic acid. Conclusion: Intense Pulsed Light is better and efficient as compared to Salicylic acid in the treatment of acne vulgaris.
