Comparative study of Serum Copper, Zinc, Cu/Zn ratio and Insulin levels in pulmonary tuberculosis patients with healthy subjects
Journal Title: International Archives of Integrated Medicine - Year 2016, Vol 3, Issue 4
Abstract
Background: Tuberculosis is an important global health problem which is declared as global emergency by world health organization (WHO) in 1993. The basic problem is in early diagnosis of the disease and neglecting the role of essential micro nutrition like copper, Zinc, and factors of metabolic derangement like insulin. Aim: Estimation and correlation of fasting serum zinc, copper, and insulin levels in newly detected untreated adult pulmonary tuberculosis patients. To compare the serum and copper, zinc level cu/Zn ratio and insulin in both newly detected untreated adult pulmonary tuberculosis patients with healthy volunteers Materials and methods: The study included 40 newly detected sputum smear positive, untreated adult pulmonary tuberculosis patients and 40 healthy controls. Serum copper, zinc, insulin, FBS, total protein, and albumin were estimated in their subjects. Results: There was significant increase in serum copper levels, pulmonary tuberculosis patients when compare to the control group (221.93± 64.92 µg/dl and 137.83±26.71 µg/dl respectively). The cu/ZN ratio was significantly higher in patients then control (1.35±0.46 and 0.69±0.19 respectively). There was significant decrease in Zn in pulmonary tuberculosis patients when compared to controls, (170.97±34.99 µg/dl and 207.71207.71±38.37 µg/dl respectively). However, there was no significant in insulin level in patients compared with controls (9.27±7.86µ IU/l and9.48±µ UI/L respectively). Conclusion: The early and effectively diagnosis of tuberculosis in the study groups was influenced by factors such as increase d copper and decreased Zinc levels and increased copper Zinc ratio.
