COMPARISON IN THE QUALITY OF MOTOR BLOCK BETWEEN ROPIVACAINE AND BUPIVACAINE BOTH COMBINED WITH LIGNOCAINE DURING PERIBULBAR ANAESTHESIA BY SINGLE MEDIAL INJECTION IN CATARACT SURGERY- A COHORT STUDY

Journal Title: Journal of Evidence Based Medicine and Healthcare - Year 2017, Vol 4, Issue 33

Abstract

BACKGROUND Anaesthesia for cataract surgery has developed much in the recent times. Regional anaesthesia with peribulbar block is a technique of choice for most patients undergoing cataract surgery. Ropivacaine, a new aminoamide local anaesthetic agent with greater margin of safety is now being used. The aim of this study is to compare the quality of motor block between ropivacaine and bupivacaine both combined with lignocaine in peribulbar anaesthesia by a single medial injection1,2 for cataract surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS 200 patients of ASA I, II, III classes scheduled for elective cataract surgery was studying. Those who received peribulbar injection of bupivacaine 0.5% and lignocaine 2% were taken as group A and those who received ropivacaine 0.5% and lignocaine 2% were taken as group B (maximum 7-10 mL). RESULTS Result of the study showed that the quality of motor block as assessed by the ocular movement score and eye lid movement score was better in the ropivacaine group compared to bupivacaine group. CONCLUSION Ropivacaine a new aminoamide drug possessed properties similar to bupivacaine but provides better quality of motor block when combined with lignocaine.
