Comparison of dental archwidths in patients qualified for orthodontic treatment sixty years ago and present

Abstract
Introduction. The human dentition undergoes morphological and functional changes throughout each person’s life. Environmental factors on the width of dental arches, as well as the facial morphology is still a cause of numerous controversies. Aim: To compare the width of dental arches in patients qualified for orthodontic treatment at the Department of Orthodontics, Medical University of Warsaw sixty years ago and at present. Material and methods: The material comprised 98 plaster models of patients aged 9-11 years; 55 models were taken between 1950 and 1952 and 43 models were taken between 2011 and 2012. The plaster models were used to measure the anterior width of the lower dental arch according to Kahl-Nieke and posterior width of the upper dental arch according to McNamara. Results: Statistically significant decrease of the posterior width of the upper dental arch was has found in contemporary patients in comparison with the posterior widths of upper dental arches of patients 62 years ago. No statistically significant difference was found in the anterior width of the lower dental arches between the groups. Conclusions: The results may indicate the higher susceptibility to external factors, including environmental factors, on the transversal dimensions of the upper dental arches, in contrast to the anterior widths of the lower dental arch, which has remained unchanged for 62 years. However the further studies on this matter are required on numerous models (n>100) to confirm research hypothesis at significant level (p<0.05)(Orthod. Forum 2012; 8: 173 - 82).
