Comparison of effectiveness of edetate disodium and citric acid in removal of smear layer from canal dentine surface

Abstract
Introduction. During root canal preparation, irrespective of the instrumentation used, there is a layer of contaminants on the surface of canal dentine which can be removed with sodium hypochlorite and EDTA. Aim of the study. To compare purity level of root canal dentine walls after the application of citric acid and EDTA. Material and methods. Twenty roots from extracted human teeth were used in the study. The samples were randomly divided into two groups I and II of ten teeth each, and exposed to irrigations with EDTA, citric acid and sodium hypochlorite. Results. The results show that average values of canal dentine are similar in both examined groups in the vicinity of the canal orifice and in the apical region of roots. Conclusions. Following the application of EDTA and citric acid, the similar purity level of dentinal tubules was obtained.
