Comparison of the results of neuromuscular excitability studies of normally innervated muscles based on the IT curve with reference values presented in renowned physiotherapy textbooks

Journal Title: Fizjoterapia Polska - Year 2009, Vol 9, Issue 2

Abstract

Introduction. The IT curve is used to assess neuromuscular excitability The aim of this article is to compare the reference ranges of parameters from renowned physiotherapy textbooks with the results ofa study carried out by the authors. Materiał and methods. The study involved seventy-six women between the ages of 19 and 43 years without detectable abnormalities ofthe function of the median nerve, and the flexor digitorum superficialis and profundus found on clinical examination. Results. The profile of the IT curve for triangular pulses as well as the values of the accommodation coefficient and quotient differed from those presented in the physiotherapy literaturę. The diagram for the triangular pulse (impulse duration: 1-0.05 ms) showed a steeper curve in comparison to the curve of the rectangular pulse. The accommodation coefficient for healthy muscles exceeded the value of 2. The accommodation quotient values for healthy muscles were 1.5-4. The results for other parameters fell within the reference ranges provided in the renowned textbooks. Conclusions. The values of the accommodation coefficient given in most textbooks are overestimated and the values of the accommodation quotient are underestimated. The l/T curve is steeper for short triangular pulses than for rectangular pulses. Much lower intensity is reguired when a muscle is stimulated with short rectangular pulses (0.5-0.05 ms) as compared to triangular pulses.
