Abstract

Free associative experiment enables to determine the associative meaning through the analysis and synthesis of associative reaction on the given word-stimulus which represents the aim of this research. The advantage of free associative experiment lies in simplicity of getting mass experimental material that is later undergoes a multifaceted transformation. The results of associative experiment show that associative response is never random. They reflect the cultural foundation of the nation, its outlook which was handed down from generation to generation, and due to its significance still exist in the consciousness of people. This work is devoted to analysis of the associative field of zoonyms that is the object of study. The subject of the research is the associative field structure of real zoonyms. The results of the free associative experiment which was conducted involving 30 English, Ukrainian and Russian native-speaker informants served as the material for this research. Informants gave their reaction to the stimulus, which was given in their native language. In our study, two complementing each other ways were selected. Thus there have been two stages in methods of analyzing the results of the experiment. At the first stage we followed the method of O. Karpenko, at the second — the method of determining semantic gestalts of associative field used by Yu. Karaulov. To some extent these methods are consistent with the proposed by I. Sternin and Z. Popova ways, but have their own identity.
