Journal Title: Advanced Linguistics - Year 2018, Vol 1, Issue 1

Abstract

The phraseological unit is a stable and indivisible word-combination, the meaning of which cannot be defined from the sum of the meanings of its components. The characteristic features of the phraseological unit lie in its being metaphorical and expressive. Thus, the phraseological units can influence on the reader in a communicative and emotional ways. In the frame of studying the lexical and semantic properties of the English phraseological units we analysed the usage of phraseological units by the crucial representatives of the modernistic literature and the role of phraseological units in the process of creation of the imagery. To conduct the analysis we classified the phraseological units used by James Joyce, Virginia Woolf and David Herbert Lawrence in their literary works according to several classifications of the renowned linguists, including Charles Bally, Vladimir Vinogradov, Alexander Kunin, Igor Anichkov and Alexander Smirnitsky. In order to analyze the methods applied by translators in the process of rendering the English phraseological units we studied the most common translation transformation, which were used by translators of the works of the abovementioned modernistic writers.
