Coping strategies in cyberbullying. A qualitative approach from students’ perspective

Abstract

Children and adolescents use Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) daily, but this extended use exposes them to several online risks including cyberbullying (online bullying among peers). Using a qualitative approach, this study describes the strategies that involved and not involved students would develop to cope with cyberbullying. Results show that students are aware of several coping strategies to deal with online bullying, preferring to use these proactive strategies instead of negative ones in which students get the aggression act back to the bullie or keep indifferent behaviors. Taking this context account, parents and school staff should deal with these aggressive situations too setting clear rules up about ICT use, and reinforcing education in assertive strategies that help students to avoid and protect themselves from cyberbullying.
