Corporate Social Responsibility in the Telecommunication Industry of Pakistan

Abstract
In this article we selected Pakistan’s major four telecommunication industries i.e. MOBILINK, TELENOR, WARID and UFONE as a sample for whom the content of their official websites was being analysed in categories of Corporate Philanthropic and other major contributions. The indicators of Corporate philanthropic are education and health contributions with special reference to Pakistan are selected only. At the start of the article Corporate Social Responsibility and Philanthropic activities are explained. A brief introduction and background of the telecommunication sector is also discussed. Then emerging trends of CSR’s practices in Pakistan are debated with special reference to corporate, business and industrial sector. In literature review, the CSR’s contributions of world telecommunications and corporate sector has been tried to explore with special reference to developed and developing countries. Moreover, the role of world organizations in promoting the CSR’s trend in corporate sector is also envisaged in this article in the part of the literature review. In addition, comparative analysis of CSR’s contribution of world different telecommunication industries is also added in the study of the literature review. Furthermore, Telecommunication sector’s philanthropic contributions are also included with reference to China earthquake. Then at the end of the study after analysing the content of the official websites of the selected four telecommunication industries in context of Pakistan only, it has been concluded that Mobilink is the leading player of the CSR related Philanthropic activities especially after 2005 earthquake and 2009 floods in fields of education, health and other CSR related activities. Moreover, MOBILINK’s, TELENOR’s and WARID’s commitment with the Pakistani community is highly appreciable. But strong willingness and contribution is required from UFONE which belongs to the local telecommunication industry.
