Corpus-based Application for Translation of English Grammatical Collocations in Azeri

Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2012, Vol 3, Issue 11

Abstract

For anyone learning, translating or teaching a foreign language, collocation is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating (and at times frustrating) challenges that they will face. Collocation refers to the syntagmatic lexical relations in a language. As each language has its unique collocational patterning, collocation poses problem in translation since both translators’ and learners’ intuition, more often is inadequate for the felicitous transfer of collocation in translation. This paper emphasizes on finding the Azeri equivalents for English grammatical collocations of “transitive verb + object1 + object2” and “ transitive verb + object + complement” based on Benson et al,s classification of grammatical collocations. The analysis of Azeri translations indicated that grammatical collocation of “ transitive verb + object1 + object2” and “ transitive verb+ object + complement” are translated as “object1 + object2 + transitive verb ” and “object + complement + transitive verb” respectively. This research is corpus-based both qualitative and quantitative.
