CORRELATION BETWEEN BODY MASS INDEX AND WOMAC SCORES AMONG POPULATION WITH OSTEOARTHRITIS KNEE

Journal Title: Stanley Medical Journal - Year 2017, Vol 4, Issue 1

Abstract

Objective: To determine the correlation between Body Mass Index and WOMAC Scores among population with osteoarthritis knee are considered for this study. Study design: This is a retrospective study of correlation between Body Mass Index and WOMAC test scores among population with osteoarthritis knee with the sample size n = 222 by reviewing the medical records of patients in department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation for the period of 4 months 2016- 2017 at Madras Medical College, Chennai. Data analysis: Regression analysis establishes the relationship between the variables Body Mass Index and WOMAC Test Scores. Analysis of Variance indicates that there is significant difference between the variables Body Mass Index and WOMAC test scores. Correlation studies also suggest a positive correlation (r = 0.2561) between the Body Mass Index and WOMAC test scores. If the Body Mass Index increases, the level of pain and stiffness also increases resulting in decreased functional activities among the population with osteoarthritis knee. Conclusion: This study was conducted to find the correlation between Body Mass Index and WOMAC test score among population with osteoarthritis knee. It is concluded that, in population with osteoarthritis with increased level of Body Mass Index, there is increase of pain and stiffness and decrease in functional activities. Weight management is the main stay in management of Osteoarthritic knee
