Journal Title: Scholars Journal of Applied Medical Sciences - Year 2018, Vol 6, Issue 1

Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus is one chronic and potentially disabling disease that represents an important public health concern because of the economic burden it imposes on the person, family and society. The transition from a traditional to modern lifestyle, consumption of fat and calories rich diets combined with a high level of mental stress has compounded the problem further. Present study was undertaken to correlate body mass index (BMI), waist hip ratio (WHR) and lipid profile in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. In our study, 100 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were recruited and subjected to detailed anthropometric measurements for BMI and WHR along with laboratory investigations. Study revealed Increased BMI in total 29 patients out of which 37.5% (17) were females and 37.5% (12) were males. Increased waist hip ratio was present in total 53 patients, more in females 81.2 % (26) than in males 39.7% (27). The most common lipid abnormality in type 2 diabetic patients was hypertriglyceridemia followed by elevated LDL with the least common parameter being low HDL.
