Correlation of Carotid Intima Media Thickness (as a Marker of Atherosclerosis) with inflammatory markers, disease activity and duration of Rheumatoid Arthritis
Journal Title: The Indian Practitioner - Year 2016, Vol 69, Issue 6
Abstract
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic systemic inflammatory disorder that has several articular andextra-articular manifestations. RA is associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality as compared with the general population and the relative risk varies from 1.5 to 4.0.2,3 In patients with RA, inflammatory markers, disease severity, and rheumatoid factor (RF) seropositivity seem to be associated with the risk of later development of atherosclerosis. The inflammation in RA patients may contribute to cardiovascular disease (CVD) development and may exacerbate traditional CVD risk factors. RA patients are less likely to report symptoms of angina and more likely to experience unrecognised myocardial infarction and sudden death when compared to non-RA patients.2,4
