Abstract
Introduction The WHO report in 2010 on country profiles estimated that noncommunicable diseases account for nearly 83 of the total deaths in Oman Prehypertension can predict cardiovascular morbiditiesObjectives The study was carried out with the objective of identifying important covariates of prehypertension in OmanMaterials and Methods In the cross sectional study a structured questionnaire was used for data collection which had details on sociodemography along with measurements of blood pressure and anthropometry Binary logistic regression was used to identify important predictors of prehypertension Walds test was used to see the significance of coefficients of regressionResults 233 individuals 466 suffered from prehypertension out of the total 500 study population Mean age of prehypertensives was 4248 12 Most of them 708 were males and 292 were females 499 had secondary education and 464 had higher secondary education Wald test was significant for gender Wald 7263 p0007 sedentary occupation Wald 4518 p0034 and age Wald 10870 p0001 Percentage accuracy of classification of the model was 788The predictor model chisquare 296 p0000 accounted for 147 variability in prehypertension Area under the curve was 0725 p0000Conclusion Age occupation and gender were seen as important predictors of prehypertension in the study populationKeywords Prehypertension covariates Age Education BMI
