Cross- section of the upper airway tract in individuals presenting the skeletal Class II

Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2010, Vol 6, Issue 2

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the anterio-posterior upper airway dimensions and the NSBa angle in children with skeletal Class I and Class II. Material and methods: Material consisted of 73 lateral cephalograms. On the basis of the ANB angle value the material was devided into studied and control groups. Studied group included 36 patients with skeletal Class II aged 7- 13 years; the control group - 37 of their peers with skeletal Class I. Analysed measurements were gender-matched. Lateral cephalometric radiographs enabled determining ANB angle the size of which determined membership in one of the studied groups. The anterio-posterior upper airway dimension was evaluated according to McNamara method. Results: No statistically significant differences were found between mean values of upper anterio-posterior measurement of the upper airways between boys and girls with skeletal Class II and Class I group. A highly statistically significant difference was spotted between the mean value of lower anterio-posterior measurement of the upper airway in studied boys and girls with skeletal Class II and the control group. Statistical analysis revealed a highly significant difference between mean values of NSBa angle in compared groups. Patients with skeletal Class II had higher NSBa angle values than those with skeletal Class I. Conclusions: 1) Anterio-posterior upper airway dimension is linked to the skeletal class. In both boys and girls with skeletal Class II the mean value of measurements at the root of the tongue was lower than in the control group, while no significant relationships were observed in the measurements at the level of the soft palate. 2) Significant correlations were found in the sex-homogenous groups. 3) Statistical analysis revealed a highly significant difference between the values of the cranial base angle and the skeletal Class type. In patients with skeletal Class II this angle was more obtuse than in Class I patients. (Orthod. Forum 2010; 6: 47 - 56). Received: 26.02.2010 Accepted: 10.06.2010
