Journal Title: Scientific journal «International Journal of Philology» - Year 2017, Vol 2, Issue 272
Abstract
The article is devoted to the study of the phenomenon of euphemia in modern linguistics on the example of the media, since the mass media is the main source of information and the most effective tool to influence society. The study of the phenomenon of euphemia is carried out in linguistic, linguistic cultural, social and psychological aspects, since the main task of the media is to influence the addressee, to form his attitude to the information reported. Texts of newspapers and magazines are an interesting material for linguistic observations. The current issues of euphemisms in modern linguistics are considered, such as the definition of the concept of euphemism, analysis of the methods for the formation of euphemisms and the study of approaches to the classification of euphemisms. Particular attention is drawn to euphemisms which are used because of prejudice, social and moral taboos. Most often there are just such euphemisms in the media, because the main task of the mass media is to convey something important without offending the feelings of the addressee. Creation of euphemisms takes place through semantic changes (metaphors, abstractness, metonymy), various kinds of word-making changes and borrowings. Types of classifications differ from each other, depending on the aspect of euphemism, which is the basis of the classification. There are thematic classifications of euphemisms, social classifications, classifications by structure and by stylistic aspect.
