Current Situation, Problems and Solution Suggestions of Broiler Breeding in Balıkesir Province

Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the current situation and structural characteristics of broiler enterprises in and around Balıkesir, to address the current socioeconomic problems in the sector and to offer solutions. Within the scope of the study, a questionnaire of 40 questions was prepared on the descriptive and structural features of the enterprises, breeding activities and the problems experienced applied from 29 different enterprises. The answers given by the breeders to the questions were collected and the data were recorded. As a result of the study, it was determined that the capacity of the enterprises in and around Balıkesir increased gradually, the education level of the owners of the enterprises increased. 51.70% of the breeders were also engaged in other jobs and the enterprises were not family-run and had 1 employee at the rate of 31%. It was found that 3.40% of the enterprises within the scope of the study have 1 poultry house, the remaining enterprises have at least 2 or more poultry houses, and it has been determined that the same worker worked in 58.60% of these poultry houses. 85.18% of the enterprises produce 6 times in a year and it has been reported that Ross was the most used genotype. It was determined that deaths during the fattening period were the highest in the first 10-day period with a rate of 51.70%. The feed conversion ratio determined throughout the enterprises were mostly collected in the range of 1.50-1.80. Breeders stated that the most important problems in the sector were breeding and production costs, feed, lack of trained personnel. Structuring a technically and economically good organization with the support of the government and including all relevant stakeholders would be one of the important steps that can be taken in solving the problems.
