Cytokines and anti-cytokine therapy in periodontal disease
Journal Title: IOSR Journal of Dental and Medical Sciences (IOSR-JDMS) - Year 2017, Vol 16, Issue 4
Abstract
Periodontal disese is initiated by the presence of bacteria on tooth surface but it is the host response that helps in progression of disease. An intermediate mechanism that lies between bacterial stimulation and tissue destruction is the production of cytokines, which stimulates inflammatory events that activate effector mechanisms. There are various classes of cytokines depending on their chemical structure and origin. Owing to the unique mechanism of action, these micromolecules play a very important part in immune host defence. Anticytokine therapy for periodontal diseases especially targets proinflammatory cytokines, that is, TNF-α, IL-1, and IL-6, because these are essential for the initiation of the inflammatory immune reaction and are produced for prolonged periods in periodontitis. This therapy aims to bind the cytokines with the receptors present on target cells such as the fibroblasts.
