Cytokines, epilepsy and epileptic drugs - is there a mutual influence?
Journal Title: Pharmacological Reports - Year 2007, Vol 59, Issue 2
Abstract
In recent years, the functional disturbances of the immune system, both humoral and cell-mediated immunity, have been detected more often among persons with epilepsy than in general population. A number of irregularities in cytokine production have been found in epileptic patients. It shows that epileptic seizures stimulate, per se, synthesis of pro-inflammatory and pro-convulsive cytokines. Some antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) influence the production of cytokines, too. The influence of AEDs on cytokine concentrations in blood has been observed, e.g. during carbamazepine (CBZ) or valproic acid (VPA) therapy. This article is a review of the literature which focuses on the connections between epilepsy and the cytokine system as well as on the influence of AEDs on the cell-mediated and humoral response in epileptic patients. Correlation of immunological irregularities in patients with the type, dosage, and serum level of AEDs will allow for early detection of undesirable treatment consequences in epilepsy. Elucidation of connections between cytokine system, epileptogenesis and effectiveness of AED therapy requires a better planned research on larger groups of patients with epilepsy.

Role of phosphoinositide 3-kinase in ischemic postconditioning-induced attenuation of cerebral ischemia-evoked behavioral deficits in mice.
The present study has been designed to pharmacologically investigate the role of phosphoinositide 3-kinase in ischemic postconditioning-induced reversal of global cerebral ischemia and reperfusion-induced behavioral dysf...
Modulatory effect of high saturated fat diet-induced metabolic disturbances on angiogenic response in hepatocyte RXRα knockout mice.
Metabolic syndrome and diabetes lead to pathological angiogenesis and angiopathy. Metabolic disturbances occur as an effect of genetic and environmental interaction. Hyperleptinemia accompanies obesity and leptin is a po...
Biotechnology and genetic engineering in the new drug development. Part I. DNA technology and recombinant proteins.
Pharmaceutical biotechnology has a long tradition and is rooted in the last century, first exemplified by penicillin and streptomycin as low molecular weight biosynthetic compounds. Today, pharmaceutical biotechnology st...
Effect of licofelone against mechanical hyperalgesia and cold allodynia inthe rat model of incisional pain.
Hyperalgesia from an incisional pain is evoked by noxious stimuli (mechanicaland cold). The present study was aimed to examine the effect of licofelone, a dual inhibitor of cyclooxygenases(COX-1/COX-2) and 5-lipoxygenase...
Resveratrol improves diabetic retinopathy possibly through oxidative stress - nuclear factor κB - apoptosis pathway.
This study was designed to investigate the possible effectiveness of resveratrol (trans-3,5,4'-trihydroxystilbene) administration on oxidative stress, nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) activity and apoptosis rate in streptozotoc...
