Damages caused by European beaver (Castor fiber L., 1758) in broadleaved stands
Journal Title: Forestry Letters - Year 2016, Vol 109, Issue
Abstract
The main aims of the study were: (1) to describe the various types of damage caused by European beavers in young broadleaved stands; and (2) to check whether a steel fence built parallel to the river and laterally (both sides 40 m long) can protect the stands from these animals. The chain-link fencing (mesh size: 6 cm) was buried in the ground to the depth of 50 cm and the aboveground part of the fence was 1 m high. Our results indicate that beavers mainly cut the trees down (the dominant type of damage), most frequently close to the river. Overall, 76-99% of the damaged trees were identified in the vicinity of the river. We also found that the fence effectively protected the stands, as beavers did not pass through this barrier.

Analysis of postural strain of loggers during timber harvesting in a spruce stand
Motor-manual felling is the most common way of timber harvesting in Poland. This method of working exposes chainsaw operators to high ergonomic risk factors. One of the most significant of these is forced working posture...
Mass and density of birch pulpwood harvested from stands in different types of forest habitats
Density is one of the most important properties, on the basis of which other characteristics and attributes of lumber are evaluated. One of its more practical applications is in the evaluation of the load mass of pulpwoo...
Are vessel traits of earlywood storing effect of hydroclimatic factors on radial growth of European ash? The case study of a floodplain forest
Radial growth of trees is highly determined by environmental conditions. Wood can preserve environmental effects at different levels of its structure, regardless if tree-ring level, seasonal wood, subseasonal or cell str...
An impact of opening a forest stand with skidding trails on the disturbance to outer soil layers caused by mechanised timber harvesting
This paper covers a comparison of the extent of damage to outer soil layers caused by timber harvesting between a stand opened with a regular network of skidding trails, and a stand where no skidding trails had been esta...
Evaluation of grafts of Norway spruce in the conservation archives of endangered populations of IPTNS-IUFRO 1964/68 experiment in Krynica
In this study, the analysis of the height, quality and vitality of clones which make the conservation archives of the IPTNSIUFRO 1964/1968 experiment in Krynica was carried out. The archive protects 19.5% of population c...
