Damages caused by European beaver (Castor fiber L., 1758) in broadleaved stands
Journal Title: Forestry Letters - Year 2016, Vol 109, Issue
Abstract
The main aims of the study were: (1) to describe the various types of damage caused by European beavers in young broadleaved stands; and (2) to check whether a steel fence built parallel to the river and laterally (both sides 40 m long) can protect the stands from these animals. The chain-link fencing (mesh size: 6 cm) was buried in the ground to the depth of 50 cm and the aboveground part of the fence was 1 m high. Our results indicate that beavers mainly cut the trees down (the dominant type of damage), most frequently close to the river. Overall, 76-99% of the damaged trees were identified in the vicinity of the river. We also found that the fence effectively protected the stands, as beavers did not pass through this barrier.

Quantitative analysis of shelterbelts adjacent to fields exposed to road pollution in the area of the city of Poznan
Agricultural areas located near traffic routes are frequent elements of the landscape of growing urban centers. The agricultural products cultivated there are subject to increased amounts of pollution from the roads, as...
Mass and density of birch pulpwood harvested from stands in different types of forest habitats
Density is one of the most important properties, on the basis of which other characteristics and attributes of lumber are evaluated. One of its more practical applications is in the evaluation of the load mass of pulpwoo...
The effect of forest management systems on productivity and costs of cable yarding operations in southern China
The extension of plantations in the southern provinces of China was supposed to fill the demand-and-supply-gap within the country’s forest products industry. But a factor strongly limiting the supply capacity is the low...

An impact of opening a forest stand with skidding trails on the disturbance to outer soil layers caused by mechanised timber harvesting
This paper covers a comparison of the extent of damage to outer soil layers caused by timber harvesting between a stand opened with a regular network of skidding trails, and a stand where no skidding trails had been esta...
