DECOMMUNISATION PATTERNS OF RENAMING SETTLEMENTS IN THE SOUTH OF UKRAINE (THE CASE OF KHERSON REGION)

Abstract
In 2014-2016 in Ukraine there was a wave of renaming, as a result of which many new toponyms appeared. In the example of the Kherson region, we can say that the main models of renaming of settlements in the South of Ukraine were the inventing of principally new names (mostly of neutral nature), homonymy, or deetymologisation (inventing a name similar to the old one), and the return of the historical name. However, the new neutral names, despite their semantic neutrality, are also ideological (anti-ideological) or pseudo-neutral. Their appearance is often associated with the attempts of the population to avoid the appearance of politically and culturally colored names. It can also be noted that the wave of renaming did not restore historical justice to the Germanic- and Turkic-speaking oikonyms that were eliminated from the map in Soviet times, and not only did not “dilute” the unified Soviet toponymy, but further impoverished toponymic cultural diversity due to the use of template and not related to the history and geography of names.
