DEEP NECK INFECTION DUE TO STREPTOCOCCUS ANGINOSUS AFTER DENTAL INTERVENTION
Journal Title: Kocatepe Medical Journal - Year 2024, Vol 25, Issue 3
Abstract
Deep neck infections are infections that occur in the soft tissues located in the head and neck region. These infections may clinically limit themselves to lymphadenitis and cellulitis, as well as progress to life-threatening infections such as gangrene and sepsis. In these infections, dental interventions and traumas to the head and neck region account for the most prevalent etiological factors. Staphylococci and streptococci are the most commonly isolated microorganisms in microbiological cultures of deep neck infections. In this case, a case of deep neck infection that occurred after dental intervention in the Otorhinolaryngology Service of Ankara Training and Research Hospital was presented. Streptococcus anginosus was isolated in the wound aspiration culture taken intraoperatively from the patient. The patient was discharged with full recovery after surgical intervention and antibiotic treatment. S. anginosus is normally found in the human flora and appears as a serious infectious agent when the immune system is suppressed. S. anginosus, discussed in this case is one of the rare microorganisms that can cause deep neck infection.
