Dental status of patients suffering from gastro-esophageal reflux disease

Abstract

Introduction. Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a relatively common condition with different symptoms. Aim of the study. To assess the connection between GERD and teeth condition. Materials and methods. The study included 130 individuals, between the age of eighteen and sixty-two years. The study group consisted of 65 patients, suffering from GERD for the period of 1 to 20 years who received medical treatment and were provided with gastro-esophageal care. The control group consisted of 65 subjectively healthy individuals. Results. Patients with GERD were characterized by a more frequent occurrence of erosive lesions. Conclusions. On account of more frequent incidence of dental erosion among people with gastro- esophageal reflux disease it is necessary to develop and implement the prophylactic plan for this group of patients in cooperation with gastroenterologists.
