Depression and Subjective Well-being in School Age Adolescent

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent is a period of psychological turmoil manifested in terms of higher stress, depression and changes in subjective well-being. Many behavioural and psychological disorders often go undiagnosed and untreated for years. This study aims to assess depression and subjective well-being among school age adolescents. MATERIAL & METHODS: A descriptive co-relational approach was adopted and random sampling (lottery method) technique was used to enrolled 100 school going adolescents (14- 17years) in the study. Information on personal characteristics, depression and subjective wellbeing was sought by using socio-demographic profile sheet, modified Beck depression inventory and modified subjective well-being scale. Appropriate descriptive and inferential statistics was applied to generate results. RESULTS: Study findings show that majority (80%) of the sample had no depression followed by 18% who reported mild depression. Similarly, 81% adolescents reported moderate subjective well-being. Further, it was observed that level of depression did not show any significant association with socio-demographic profiles of the subjects. Similarly, there was no significant corelation was reported between depression score and subjective well-being score in adolescents. CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION: The study findings reported moderate level of subjective well-being; majority had no symptoms of depression but 18% reported mild depression. Still, study recommends devising effective psychological strategies to improve depression status and subsequently subjective well-being in adolescents.
