Depression, anxiety and alcoholism risk among informal workers

Abstract

OMS points that 45% of lesser mental upheavals attack about 30% of busy workers and serious mental upheavals, 5 until 10%. This research aims to identify the risk, the sociodemographic profile and the risk factors for depression, anxiety and alcoholism among 86 informal workers in João Pessoa – PB, in the period of august of 2006 to october of 2007. It is an individual, observational, transversal cut study. The data were collected through questionnaires SRQ-20, CAGE and a questionnaire about risk factors for mental health. The software SPSS 15.0 was used for the analysis. Depression and anxiety risk has appeared in 31,4% of the sample, and the alcoholism risk, in 24,4%. The common sociodemographic data related to the studied risks were: predominance age of 21 till 40 years old and monthly income of one until three minimum wages. The risk factors high workload and insufficient time for leisure were associated with depression, anxiety and alcoholism risks. It is emphasized the necessity of development of mental health actions to minimize the suffering of such workers, improving their quality of life. The community therapy is indicated as an action to prevent the mental disorder.
