Design of Proximity Coupled Patch Antenna for Miniaturization and Directivity Enhancement

Abstract
A thorough investigation of microstrip patch antenna performance in presence of superstrate layer has been presented in this paper. Superstrate improves directivity and reduces resonant frequencies. The proximity coupled antenna has been designed to analyze the performance of antenna .The parameters of antenna are evaluated for circular patch antenna using FR4 epoxy substrate with relative permittivity 4.4 and superstrate. The effects of relative permittivity on patch antenna has been taken as case study and has been estimated using method of moment based EM simulator IE3D version 15.4 .It is observed that a variation of relative permittivity value of Superstrate layer leads to lowered resonant frequency and improved directivity without much effect on gain and bandwidth of antenna.
