Determination of Buried Archaeological Structures By Archeogeophysical Methods (Olba, Mersin, Turkey)

Abstract

Today, there are many research areas where interdisciplinary studies are quite common. One of these is the joint research carried out by geological engineers, geophysical engineers and archeologists. The use of geophysical prospection methods in archaeological fieldwork has gradually been increased and become commonly used due to the advantages it provided. It is very important to know the locations, sizes and qualities of underground buried monuments before excavation works. The surface archeological survey has been ongoing project in Olba (Mersin, Silifke) open air ancient city since 2001. The archeological surveys provided detailed information concerning with the settlement history of the site and geological formation has been also studied in the area. The archeological surface survey turning it to an excavation, the geophysical investigation of the site carries vital importance. In two of the chosen three locations, named as “Theater” and “Church Front” two dimensional analyses were carried out. At the third location in front of the old school building, analysis was 3-dimesional.
