Journal Title: JOURNAL OF CONTEMPORARY MEDICINE - Year 2018, Vol 8, Issue 3

Abstract

Objective: Patient safety culture is a patient-centered concept which includes leadership, team work, communication, and learning. Patient safety culture should be formed in hospitals with a view to protecting patients from potential harms and providing patient safety. The study was conducted to determine and compare patient safety culture perceptions of health workers working in the maternity and children’s hospital in two different regions. Material and Methods: This descriptive study was conducted with 216 health professionals working in two Maternity and Children Hospitals connected to the Ministry of Health Department in November 2015 and located in the South and East parts of Turkey. The data were collected through Personal Information Form and Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSPSC). Ethical permissions were received from the institutions where the study was conducted. The data were analyzed in SPSS 16.  Results: Of all the health professionals participating in the study, 71,8% were in Hospital A and 28,2% were in Hospital B; 56,8% were nurses, 41,2% were midwives, and 12% were doctors. 80,6% of the health professionals received training on patient safety. Hospital A was found to receive higher mean scores in the HSPSC subscales of Error Evaluation (2,71±0,883), Hospital Management Support (3,12±0,814), Duty Shift (2,37 ±0,673), Error Reporting (3,12± 1,088), and Corporate Communication (3,27 ±0,950).On the other hand, Hospital B was found to have higher mean scores in the subscales of Overall Safety (2,66 ±0,59),  Organizational Learning (2,44 ±0,788), Team Work (3,07± 1,026), Staffing (3,04 ±0,723), and Relations across Units (3,30±0,857) . Conclusion: This study found that total HSPSC mean score of Hospital B was higher and health professionals had positive attitudes about patient safety culture, but this score was not at a desired level.
