Determination of the role of self-efficacy in young women's involvement in risky sexual behaviors

Journal Title: مجله تحقیقات کیفی در علوم سلامت - Year 2015, Vol 4, Issue 1

Abstract

Introduction: Risky sexual behaviors are a great threat to the physical and social health of the youth. Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) have become a global epidemic; therefore, sexual self-efficacy has an important role in the area of risky sexual behaviors and safe sex. This study was designed to explore the role of young women’s self-efficacy on risky sexual behavior. Method: In this qualitative study, we recruited 75 young women aged 18-35. Data was collected using focus group discussions (7 sessions) and individual in-depth interviews (12 interviews) in 2012. We employed content analysis with Graneheim and Lundman's approach to analyze the data. We used multiple data collection methods, maximum variation sampling, and external observation to enhance dependability and credibility of data. Results: The results of the present study were categorized into three subcategories of "inability to end relationship", "inability to make a correct decision", and "inability to reject sexual relation". Some participants who had sexual experience expressed that they were not able to say "no" in response to a sexual offer. Some others reported that they did not select appropriate boyfriends. Some participants stated that they were not able to end a relationship when they no longer desired to continue. Conclusion: The results showed that participants do not have sufficient self-efficacy to manage cross-sex interactions. Results of the present study can be useful in planning preventive strategies regarding young girls' risky sexual behaviors
