Determination of Yield and Yield Components in the F1 and F2 Generations of Dent Corn
Journal Title: ISPEC Journal of Agricultural Sciences - Year 2023, Vol 7, Issue 3
Abstract
This study was carried out to determine how the yield and yield components changed in the F1 and F2 generation of some dent corn cultivars grown in the Konya region. In the study, F1 and F2 generations of seven single cross hybrids were used as plant materials. In the trail tasseling period, plant height, ear length, ear diameter, number of ears per plant, number of kernels per ear, thousand kernel weight, single ear weight, grain/cob rate and grain yield were investigated. In the study, significant differences were found among the varieties and between generations for all traits examined, except the number of ears per plant. In the F2 generation, there were decreases in all of the characters, except the tasseling period, and this decrease occurred at different rates depending on the cultivars. As the average of the variety, the maximum grain yield per decare was determined in P1241 with 1237.2 kg, and the least in KWS 6565 with 972.6 kg. Grain yield decreased by 44.1% to 28.5% in the F2 generation of cultivars compared to F1. According to the one-year results obtained from the research, it can be recommended to grow a hybrid (F1) of any of the P0937, P1241 and Dekalp 5485 varieties, which have high grain yield both in the F1 generation and as the cultivar average. F2 generation of hybrid varieties should not be used since there will be significant decreases in all characteristics, especially in grain yield.
