Determining the Optimum Pools Area and Volume: A case Study for Mazandaran Province

Journal Title: Journal of River Engineering - Year 2014, Vol 2, Issue 10

Abstract

Water scarcity and its negative impacts on agricultural crops is one of the problems faced by agricultural sector. To cope with this, depending on the geographic conditions in each region, contrivances have been especially contemplated. While they are among high rainy zones, the majority of rainfall occurs during off season in Northern provinces of Iran. Therefore, farmers have found out that constructing structure such as pool could reserve surface water of rain run-off and rivers upon abundance occasions or off season irrigation and use it over water shortage or maximum water requirement. In this study, 84 pools were investigated across Mazandaran province and by considering area, intake volume, and land operation cost of pools, diagrams were delineated as volume vs. cost, area vs. cost, and cost vs. volume and area as well as derived equations corresponded to the optimum area and volume. Results revealed that raising volume through increasing area involves further implementation cost than that of deeper reservoir.
