Deux palmarès d’Olympie
Journal Title: Philia: International Journal of Ancient Mediterranean Studies - Year 2018, Vol 4, Issue
Abstract
Inventories of the victories of champions from the Imperial period found at Olympia are very rare. The inscription of Leon of Rhodes (Neue Inschriften von Olympia 30) is remarkable in every way, by its form, its writing, and its arrangement. The base was in fact made, and the text inscribed, on Rhodes. We also re-examine the epigram Anthology of Planudes 50, which refers to the same person, probably to be dated from the Augustan period; we explain the allusion to the draw and to Hercules fighting against the lion of Nemea. The inscription of the herald Publius Aelius Artemas (I.Olympia 237) should be re-read in the light of the reform of the agonistic calendar operated by Hadrian; this artist won between 135 and 137 in the first celebration of many games that were created or reformed by the emperor, including the Panhellenia of Athens in 137, not long before his victory in the Olympia of the same year.
