Developing and Validating the Questionnaire on the Learners' Attitudes toward the Role of mother tongue in Second Language Learning

Abstract

The present study reported the development and validation of an attitudinal questionnaire to measure EFL learners' perceptions of using L1 in foreign language learning. The questionnaire was developed using the relevant literature. A pool of items was prepared and they were checked against the objectives of the study. Five constructs related to the purpose of the questionnaire were identified and the final version of the questionnaire was administered on 32 EFL learners studying English language translation and TEFL at Islamic Azad University, Shiraz branch. The results of correlation coefficient showed a satisfactory level of correlation between the single items and the constructs of the questionnaire. The questionnaire was re-administered and a significant relationship was also found between two administrations of the questionnaire. This questionnaire could be used as a valid instrument in the studies pursuing the role of L1 in second or foreign language learning.
