Development of settlement differentiation by level of life of the population of Ukraine

Abstract

Significant disparities in the level of living of the rural and urban population are characteristic of the socioeconomic life of Ukraine. At the same time, a greater understanding of the problem reveals that there is a high polarization of the society, where on the one side there are villages and small towns, and on the other ? major cities. This trend is manifesting in the poverty rate too. The differences in the quality of life in villages and towns emerged in the industrialization era, when a considerable number of workers appeared in the countryside. The standard of living in the cities began to grow. The first attempts to equalize living conditions in the countryside and in the cities were made in the USSR. The programs of electrification, gasification and differentiation of tariffs for utilities improved the lives of rural residents. While the territories of Ukraine were under Polish rule, the rural population lived in the best conditions. After the collapse of the USSR the gap between the living standards of the population of the village and the city has deepened, and this was reflected in the poverty level. The modern Ukrainian village has a significantly lower standard of living (in agriculture wages are the lowest among the sectors of the economy and the social infrastructure is mainly represented by Soviet remains), and the number of people living below the poverty line has increased.
