Diabetes in Pregnancy: Indian Scenario
Journal Title: The Indian Practitioner - Year 2016, Vol 68, Issue 11
Abstract
Prevalence of diabetes is at rising globally as well as in India. An equal rise has been noted in the prevalence of diabetes in pregnancy also called Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM). India has the second largest diabetic population in the world after China. Apart from ethnicity, rise in prevalence of obesity and an increase in the body mass index (BMI) in women of child bearing potential are associated with increased risk for GDM. As of now there has been no consensus in diagnostic criteria for GDM. Even in India controversy exists in different diagnostic criteria to be applied for diagnosis of GDM. It has been evident through number of studies that gestational hyperglycaemia is associated with maternal as well as foetal complications. Current review addresses the clinical issues related with GDM in terms of its prevalence, diagnostic criteria, complications associated with GDM and management.
