Diabetes Mellitus and Oxidative Stress: A Co-relative and Therapeutic Approach
Journal Title: Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research - Year 2019, Vol 13, Issue 5
Abstract
ABSTRACT Oxidative stress is one of the factors that lead to Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), a serious and a fast growing health problem worldwide. Numerous studies report that the pancreatic β-cells play an important role in T2DM progression but the underlying molecular mechanism has not been fully deciphered. The biochemical changes in diabetes mellitus lead to disturbance in oxidative milieu which in turn leads to several macro and microvascular complications in patients. Diabetes mellitus represents an ideal disease to study the adverse effects of oxidative stress and its treatment. The literature search performed using the terms: diabetes mellitus, the effect of oxidative stress on β-cells, role of oxidative stress in diabetes mellitus and antioxidant therapy based randomised human clinical trial have been reviewed. The present review is a brief account of the different characteristics of oxidative stress in diabetes and proposes their probable clarifications. The review also highlights the beneficial effects of anti-oxidant therapy in diabetic patients by elimination of the excess reactive oxygen species efficiently and summarises the present knowledge on the role of oxidative changes in diabetes mellitus and their effect on β-cell function that may help in development of new therapeutic strategies for this disease.
