Diagnose of soil use and conservation in a land reform area in semiarid region
Journal Title: Revista Verde de Agroecologia e Desenvolvimento Sustentável - Year 2017, Vol 12, Issue 3
Abstract
In semi-arid regions, with emphasis to Brazilian Northeast region, the agriculture practiced in rural settlements is based in smallholdings. It is assumed that adoption of conventional land use practices favors soil degradation. In this study the aim was to diagnose the practices of land use that are adopted by smallholders, identifying vulnerabilities and the viability to adopt conservationist practices that still are not used. The query was applied to 19 families, representing a sample of 16% of the 120 families. The smallholders recognized the predominance of clayey soils located at plain and slightly inclined relief, besides the presence of gravels. The predominance of the consortium between maize and beans was mentioned by smallholders, as well as the use of crops residues to feed livestock. More than 50% of the families informed the practice of harrowing for land preparation, besides the establishment of planting down the hill. Also was mentioned the fire use for land preparation and the non-use of agrochemicals. The largest part of the families informed that rural technical assistance, promoted by governmental entities, is the most searched by smallholders, highlighting the importance of these entities to orientate smallholders regarding aspects of soil management and soil conservation that still are not used. The smallholders need to be oriented to improve conservationist practices that have been used, such conservationist practices developed in the settlements should not be considered only as site interest, because they impact society in global way.
