Diagnostic evaluation by colonoscopy in patients presenting with bleeding per rectum

Abstract
Background: Majority of the patients referred to surgeons for investigation of per rectal bleeding have benign anal disease or proctitis. The use of colonoscopy has become accepted as the most effective method of screening the colon and rectum for cancer, precancerous polyps and tumors. Aim: To evaluate its diagnostic utility for patients presenting with bleeding per rectum. Material and Methods: This prospective observational clinical study included 43 patients who underwent colonoscopy for per rectal bleeding. The procedure of colonoscopy was performed and the associated complications were noted down. The abnormal areas were biopsied and sent for histopathology. Results: In present study, most common findings in cases of bleeding per rectum was colitis (39.5%) followed by growth (18.6%). Solitary rectal ulcer, colonic diverticula and proctosigmoiditis were seen in 7% cases each. Normal colonoscopy was reported in 14% cases. Conclusion: Most common findings in cases of bleeding per rectum was colitis (39.5%) followed by growth (18.6%). The introduction of flexible endoscopes has brought a revolution in the field of examination and biopsies for colorectal pathologies.
