Diagnostic imagingof focal pancreatic masses. Part one: methods

Journal Title: Gastroenterologia Polska - Year 2007, Vol 14, Issue 6

Abstract

The term "focal pancreatic masses" includes all focal changes such as benign non-neoplastic solid, liquid and mixed tumors as well as benign/malignant neoplasms in the pancreatic field. Fast and multidirectional development of radiology in the last 2-3 decades has brought many modifications of diagnostic imaging mathods and some completely new techniques. Authors describe their applications in the diagnosis of focal pancreatic masses. In the analyzed literature the method of choice forthe purpose is multi-row and multi-phase computed tomography (CT). Trans-cutaneous ultrasound is the good method forfollow-up of some dynamic processes (i.e. pseudocysts) and evaluation of vascularstructures closed to the pancreatic tumors. Important role of ultrasound is seen also in diagnosing of clinically silent pancreatic tumors and monitoring of some invasive procedures (drainages, FNAB) but in the latter endoscopic ultrasound is preferred. In equivocal CT results it is proposed to perform magnetic resonance imaging according to the protocol adequate to the clinical problem. In some cases angiography and positron emission tomography can be also useful.
