Diagnostic Value of Vibration Perception Threshold in Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy
Journal Title: International Journal of Physiology - Year 2018, Vol 6, Issue 3
Abstract
Objective: To validate the discriminative power of Vibration Perception Threshold (VPT) considering Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) as gold standard in type 2 diabetes mellitus in the diagnosis of diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Materials and Method: Thirty patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus and thirty subjects who are age, sex and BMI matched normal controls were tested with Vibration Perception Threshold and Nerve Conduction Studies; mean ± SD of the characteristics were calculated. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values for the Vibration Perception Threshold was calculated, considering Nerve Conduction Studies as gold standard. Results: The positive and negative predictive values were calculated to be 84% and 74.29% respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of VPT was found to be70 % and 86.6% respectively. Conclusion: Vibration Perception threshold has shown positive correlation with NCS in the evaluation of peripheral neuropathy in diabetes. It may be a better screening tool due to simple procedure and cheaper in cost.

Predominance of Multi Modality Preferences in both Males and Female I Year Medical Students, Using VARK Questionnaire
Background: The sensory modality which we use to assimilate and learn information may be visual (V), auditory (A), read-write (%) or Kinesthetic (K). Individuals who prefer one modality are said to be unimodal and those...
NMDA Receptors and Memory of Pain
Background & Objective: NMDA is a receptor for the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate, which is released with noxious peripheral stimuli. They are critical for the development of the central nervous system (CNS), gene...
Learning Style Preferences in I Year Medical Students based on VARK Questionnaire- A Descriptive Study
Background: Learning styles are classified based on the sensory modality used to assimilate information. It could be visual, aural, read/write or kinesthetic. Each individual may prefer one or more sensory modality for i...
