Dialekt kreteński języka nowogreckiego – próba opisu na bazie materiału hydronimicznego. Część 3: zjawiska fonetyczne i morfologiczne ograniczone terytorialnie

Abstract

The paper contains a concise discussion of thirteen regional innovations of the Cretan dialect (including 9 phonetic and 4 morphological ones) that may be observed in the island’s modern hydronymy. Two phonetic phenomena and four morphological ones unanimously divide the island of Crete into two zones of similar size: the western area (comprising two regional units, corresponding to the earlier prefectures of Chania and Rethymno) and the eastern area (likewise spanning two regional units, Heraklion and Lasithi). On the basis of these local phenomena, it is necessary to distinguish two basic subdialects: West Cretan and East Cretan. Some phonetic innovations are dispersed and generally limited to minor local areas (e.g. those of Kissamos, Sfakia and Viannos). All of the morphological innovations under discussion appeared exclusively in the West Cretan subdialect, which at the same time introduced no common phonetic innovations in the western area of island. Thus, from the morphological point of view, the western variety of the Cretan dialect is more innovative than the eastern idioms. On the other hand, the East Cretan subdialect introduced a number of common phonetic innovations in the whole area of eastern Crete.
