Diatoms Bacillariophyta in springs and riverhead stream sections in the upper part of the San river

Journal Title: Roczniki Bieszczadzkie - Year 2012, Vol 20, Issue 1

Abstract

The diatom flora in the Bieszczady National Park has been extremely poorly investigated, especially in springs and spring sections of the streams. Currently, the study aimed to enrich the knowledge of species diversity of the upper section of the San River and its tributaries is being developed. The results of preliminary observations indicate considerable species richness of diatoms, which is associated with the diversity of habitats. One of the most important condition influencing diatom communities structure is alkalinity of the water. Among 350 of the identified taxa, the interesting group constitute aerial taxa and epibryophytes. In addition, Didymosphenia geminata, which is considered to be an invasive species, is very rarely noted in upper part of San river. It is in contrast with previous data from the region reporting massive occurrence of that species below the Solina and Myczkowce reservoirs.
