Die /r/-Allophone in der modernen deutschen Phonolexikographie

Journal Title: Lublin Studies in Modern Languages and Literature - Year 2018, Vol 42, Issue 1

Abstract

The phoneme /r/ is the most multi-faceted one in contemporary German. As a rule, phoneticians distinguish at least three main consonantal and two vocalic realization types of /r/. The aim of this paper is to look at the ways in which all these variants are treated in four modern dictionaries of German pronunciation, namely in Großes Wörterbuch der deutschen Aussprache (GWDA) of 1982 and the 2000 edition of the Duden Aussprachewörterbuch, which the author considers as orthophonic dictionaries of the second generation, as well as in Deutsches Aussprachewörterbuch (DAWB) of 2009 and the newest 2015 edition of the Duden Aussprachewörterbuch being considered here the dictionaries of the third generation. To begin with, the treatment of the consonantal and the vocalic allophones in the introductory section and in the word list of each reference work is being analyzed. Furthermore, some controversies between the dictionaries in question concerning the distribution of the different /r/ varieties are discussed. As for the dictionaries of the third generation, it is also examined how the regional differentiation of the /r/ pronunciation is revealed by the respective authors.
