Abstract

Plusieurs théologiens du XIIIe et du XIVe siècle discutent la question de savoir si toutes les choses créées peuvent être utilisées (c.-à-d. reliées à la fin ultime de la vie humaine). L’article analyse les positions d’Albert le Grand, de Robert Kilwardby, de Bonaventure, de Th omas d’Aquin, de Pierre de Tarentaise, de Richard de Mediavilla, de Gilles de Rome, de l’Anonyme de Bruges, de Guillaume Pierre de Godin et de Durand de St. Pourçain. Ce survol montre (1) que Bonaventure et Thomas ont exercé une influence majeure sur les théories postérieures de l’usage ; (2) que dans cette question l’antithomisme de Durand reste assez modéré; (3) que les théologiens mentionnés partagent un optimisme métaphysique, selon lequel Dieu utilise tant le bien que le mal en vue de sa Bonté absolue.
