Discoloration of azo dyes, Schäffer acid and R salt derivatives, by microorganisms of activated sludge

Journal Title: CHEMIK nauka-technika-rynek - Year 2012, Vol 66, Issue 12

Abstract

In this study the ability of activated sludge to perform the discoloration of solutions of azo dyes, Schäffer acid and R salt derivatives, was investigated. It was found that the efficiency of dye removal from solution decreased when an additional sulfonic group was introduced to the dye molecule. Modification of dye by introduction of the rest of D-gluconic acid improved the discoloration of the solution. The increase in the initial dye concentration had no effect on the degree of discoloration, but it caused the increase in the amount of dye adsorbed on the cell surface of the activated sludge
