Disease in the ancient medicine of mesopotamia

Journal Title: Globalization, the State and the Individual - Year 2018, Vol 3, Issue 3

Abstract

The library of the Assyrian king Assurbanipal (668-631 B.C.) contains clay tablets with two textbooks of contemporary medicine: therapy and diagnosis. While in the therapeutic textbook the one who cares about the health of the patient is a physician, in the diagnostic textbook the main role is given to the exorcist. Many diseases, as it was thought, could be caused by the “heat of the sun” or by a “gust of wind”. Unexpected appearance of animals and the dreams were interpreted as the sign of the desease. Sumero-Akkadian dictionaries exchange over 200 deseases.
