Breast pumps are easily available over the counter and the design has evolved over the years to meet the varying needs of the mother. Various types of breastpumps are available in the market. Recent research has advocated the need for individualizing the breastpump according the needs of the mother. As the reasons for expressing have broadened and so also the equipment available for milk expression. This review is intended as an evidence- based approach to aid clinicians and lactation professionals individualize the breast pump to the mother- infant dyads’ characteristics.
