Abstract

Background: Documentation of traditional therapeutic uses of plants can open up new avenues for research leading to discovery of lead compounds and new drugs. The objective of this study was to document the medicinal plants used by a folk herbalist (FH) of Comilla district, Bangladesh. Methods: Interview of the FH was carried out with the help of a semi-structured questionnaire and the guided field-walk method. Results: The FH used a total of 34 plants distributed into 27 families in his formulations. Conclusion: The results suggest that the FH possessed a good knowledge of the medicinal properties of plants. As such, the plants merit further scientific studies towards new drug discoveries.
